PRESIDENT'S MESSDAGE

The month of October is allowing our Club the opportunity to once again adhere to the fourth principle of Altrusa, as established by Mamie L. Bass in 1921.  That principle provides as follows:

ìAltrusa, in the very derivation of its name, is committed to the philosophy of unselfishness. The joy of giving rather than getting, and to the search for thathappiness which is based upon spiritual worthiness.î

During the past twelve years Altrusa International of Lake City has unselfishly committed to sponsor the Annual Charity Gala, which has generated more than a quarter of a million dollars for the needy in our community.  How many lives we have touched and made a difference in, weíll never know.  But, we can experience the joy of giving when we distribute the funds and receive the gratitude of the recipients.

Ironically, on October 26th, the day of our Gala, USA Weekend Magazine is celebrating ìMake A Difference Dayî - a national day of neighbors helping neighbors - which is just what Altrusa has been doing in Lake City through the Gala for more than twelve years.  For that reason, we need to make the Gala the best ever.

We have also committed to join Altrusa International in ìMake a Difference Dayî by donating used (or new) books to the Council on Aging and Suwannee Valley 4-Cs.  Please remember to take the books to the Altrusa meeting on October 17th.

By participating in these two worthy projects, letís show the nation that Altrusans in Lake City really know how to make a difference.

News from Our Governor

September 30 marks the date when Altrusa lost one of itís most dedicated members, Cassie Dollar.  Her faithful dedication to the Altrusa Principles will continue to inspire us all. The Atlanta Club established the Cassie S. Dollar Rehabilitative Service Award, a District Three Foundation Award, in her honor in 1999.  This was done in honor of her 90th birthday and her 40th year as an Altrusan.

Inspiration

Maturity begins to grow when you can sense your concern for others outweighing your concern for yourself.

    John MacNoughton

Cassie Dollar Obituary as it appeared in Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In 1928 Cassie Dollar went to work as a bookkeeper for Eager & Simpson Corsetierres, a small Atlanta firm that manufactured and sold corsets and bras at a time such intimate apparel wasn't readily available in stores.
Soon Mrs. Dollar's duties and the firm's focus changed. Eager & Simpson was called upon to fashion body braces and other corrective garments for patients at the polio clinic at Warm Springs, and Mrs. Dollar, an accomplished seamstress, became a custom fitter and crafter of these products.  She eventually bought the business in 1950 and operated it until 1976, when she sold it to J.E. Hanger, a nationwide maker of orthotic and prosthetic equipment. For 20 years thereafter, until she was 90, she was a consultant for Hanger. "Mother never sought recognition and never made a lot of money from her work," said her daughter, Juanita Scruggs of Marietta. "She kept prices low for people in need. She was selfless."
The funeral for Mrs. Dollar, 95, of Marietta, will be 11 a.m. tomorrow at H.M. Patterson & Sons, Spring Hill. She died Monday of an aneurysm at Piedmont Hospital.
For 46 years Mrs. Dollar devoted herself to Altrusa, a global service organization for business and professional women. In 1996, the club set up an award in her name to honor local chapters for outstanding rehabilitation work.    "Cassie's life was one of service," said Sandy Furches of Lake City, Fla., governor of Altrusa's southeastern district. "She applied her sewing talents and her business acumen to make life better for people with disabilities. Her humility, positive attitude and gentle spirit will forever inspire us."
Survivors include a son, James Dollar Jr. of Newnan; a sister, Mildred Grant of Dunwoody; three brothers, Benson Skelton of Tallahassee, John Skelton of Tampa and Jack Skelton of Dunwoody; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dear Altrusa Sisters,
I received a message from Cindy Mielike, who now lives in Alabama but was an active member of our Club when she lived in Lake City. By just going to this website www.thebreastcancer.com and clicking where indicated, a free mammogram may be offered to a woman in need.  I donít like ìchain Letterî messages but this can save lives.  Please pass this on!

Dear Friends,
This is the first time I have opened my email in 10 days. I was so saddened to learn about Cassie Dollarí passing away.  She impacted my life in so many ways, Our district has lost a great member.
My granddaughter has been in our care.  It has consumed all of our time, but it has been well worth it.  We have been able to give her more normalcy in her life.  After a few days, she quit crying a lot of the time and began to have periods of joy and happiness again.  She even stood for a brief moment on Monday.  She goes back to the center at Tampa General Hospital tomorrow.  They have not yet scheduled surgery, but they will definitely operate on her.  They just do not know when at this point.

District 3 Vice Governor
*Cindyís 21 month-old granddaughter recently  suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
