Welcome to the beginning of the 2002-2003 Altrusa year.  It's going to be a great year!  We are going to work hard but we are also going to play hard and have fun.

For twenty years the Altrusa Club of Lake City has developed an impeccable reputation for leadership and service to our community.  We have contributed countless number of hours of service and have distributed more than a quarter of a million dollars to worthy causes. As a result of all the work we did last year, not only did our Club garner several awards at the District Conference in May, but  we were honored to received the highly coveted "Governorís Outstanding Club Award".  So, can we top that again this year?  Absolutely!  Therefore, my motto for this year is "Continuing to Strive for Excellence".

We will sponsor the highly successful Gala again this year under the energetic and enthusiastic leadership of Heather Gray and Jill Adams.  The Chairs of the Standing Committee are already hard at work organizing the various subcommittees and activities for the year.  And Lorrie Wheeler and Connie Scott are anxiously looking toward May 2003 when our Club will host in St. Augustine the best conference District Three has ever experienced.

Sounds like we are going to be doing a lot, right?  Well, with over 90 members in our club, we should be able to distribute it all without anyone being overly burdened.  As I said, I want us all to have fun this year.  Life is too precious not to enjoy each moment.  Let's laugh as we work together and letís not take ourselves too seriously.  But, definitely, letís keep focused on one of the main premises of Altrusa - and that is, service to others.

"Granny Good News" Helps Committee Chairs

Are you chairing a committee for the first time?  Have you taken on a new committee
thatís unfamiliar? Donít despair - Altrusa builds women.

Here are some tips from "Granny Good News", Past District Governor Shirley Foor.

No matter what the task, the goal is the same: come up with a plan for the members' consideration.
In the deliberations of your committee, consider the kinds of things that are important to each of you, because you are representative of the members.

  • Your first presentation to the membership should be a general one because you donít yet know which of the things, if any, the members will approve.
  • Present the result of your deliberations to the members in the form of a motion.
  • You will speak to the motion first, so you can explain what the committee has in mind ó not how it will be done. The ìhowî information comes later and is a matter forthe committee, not  the membership, to handle.
  • If the members agree, your next step is to develop the project more fully in committee meetings.
  • Out of respect to the members of your club, come to the meeting with motions that are specific. Don't come to the meeting with a "what do you think?" approach. Your group has been charged with getting the job done on behalf of the club.
  • Bookmark this site  http://www.districtthree.org for more "Granny Good News" ideas. This web site is your key to becoming a more effective Altrusan.  Here youíll find tools to make your committee assignments easier.  Want to find out the criteria for District awards? Look no further.  Need a form? Click on "Publications." Look at "Cool Ideas" to see what leading District Three Altrusa clubs (including Lake City) are up to.

Spotlight on International
  •  At the July 2001, International Board of Directors meeting, Literacy was adopted as the charitable focus of Altrusa International.
